Racing through summer
July 16, 2012 | News
I can’t believe that Saratoga Open House was this weekend! So much has been going on. I think I’m still in a tizzy from the excitement of Union Rags’ spectacular Belmont Stakes win http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGjGFtSiYBs (and the disappointment that we won’t see him racing this summer as he heals from an injury), combined with the fun of Book Expo week in New York where RAJA, Story of a Racehorse won TWO awards – the IPPY Bronze medal for Juvenile Fiction and the Benjamin Franklin Silver Medal for Young Reader Fiction (6-12) and the general summer mayhem of horses, shows, events, book signings, and finding time to fix fences and pull manes.
Whoa back, take a pull….as we say in the steeplechase world.
So, two highlights for RAJA real horse characters for June were:
The Jockey Club/New York Racing Association sponsored Thoroughbred classes at the Skidmore horse show.
Here’s Rather Be (remember Rather Be, the veteran racehorse at Saratoga in RAJA?) doing BOTH the hunter and jumper classes and bringing home some ribbons/prize money. This was particularly fun since he raced at Saratoga (and totally knew where he was!). When he was racing there, I galloped him on the Oklahoma track and I was there watching the day he sustained a racing career ending injury in a starter allowance steeplechase race.
Thank you NYRA/Jockey Club/Skidmore Horse Show!
Prism (remember Prism?) was a superstar at a talk I gave to kids at the Isley library in Middlebury, Vermont. As I was speaking, my friends from Twitchell Hill Farm where Prism lives surprised the kids and BROUGHT HER INSIDE the library!
She loved the attention and her mane and tail looked beautiful braided up in pink ribbons…and there were NO “accidents”. All the kids got to meet her and, Diva that she is, she basked in the attention and the paparazzi cameras. Ok, it was a photographer from the Addison County Independent local newspaper – not exactly People magazine – but Prism made the cover!
Onward to July and the rest of the summer and, of course, I’ll be rooting on our USET riders and horses at THE OLYMPICS! I’ll also be doing book signings in Saratoga to benefit the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at the racetrack at the end of the month and at the National Racing Museum (which is opening a new steeplechase wing) in early August. I’ll also be in Manchester, Vermont at the awesome Northshire Bookstore and at the Vermont Summer Festival horse show (also riding my ex-racehorses in the show!), at GMHA’s Festival of Eventing in Woodstock (Yep, riding my ex-racehorses in the event!) and at Junior Day, Sept 1, at the Hampton Classic horse Show in Long Island (where RAJA shows!). Check out the events page for details on these and other visits, talks and signings.
