April in horse country
April 20, 2012 | News
I know people get dreamy-eyed about April in Paris, but personally, I can’t think of better places to be in April and May than Maryland, Virginia and Kentucky…Hunt Cup…Rolex…Derby…Virginia Gold Cup…Preakness…the places to be for horse lovers. And now you can even be there virtually thanks to youtube and live web streaming.
Hunt Cup Fever! Wow! Here we are. Two weeks until the Maryland Hunt Cup – those of you that have read RAJA KNOW what a big deal the Maryland Hunt Cup is. I’m going to TRY to film a short walk of the course – the bits in RAJA - and post it here. In the meantime, here is a video that will give you a little flavor of Maryland timber (but the Maryland Hunt Cup fences are way BIGGER!)
And, let’s not forget, only three weeks until the granddaddy of them all, the Kentucky Derby (don’t forget, Saturday, May 5th!) Who’s following the Derby hopefuls? Here is a link to help you decide on your favorite:
Mine is UNION RAGS. Guess what races he’s won? A race in Saratoga and the Champagne Stakes (just like Raja!), the Fountain of Youth Stakes (Raja was second) and, like Raja, he had bad luck in the Florida Derby (but not as much bad luck as Raja!) and finished third. But he is pretty special. Raja-like, I’d say. Here he is working:
So much is going on this Olympic year…Show jumpers, Dressage riders and Eventers are in full swing and working hard to make the team for the London Olympics. Guess what? Rolex three day event http://www.rk3de.org/ is in two weeks with lots of ex-racehorses entered. Here are some of them:
RAJA so could have been a big time event horse.
So…RAJA, Story of a Racehorse has a new distributor so you can ask your local bookstore and library to order it. More nice reviews, including one from an English kid’s horse book review site: http://booksandmud.blogspot.com/2012/04/review-anne-hambleton-raja-story-of.html
Here is a recent interview I did with Kirkus Review: http://www.kirkusreviews.com/blog/young-adult/kirkus-q-anne-hambleton/
Before I sign off, I have to tell you about about some book signings coming up at Mid-Atlantic and New England horse events, libraries and bookstores this Spring. I will be at my favorite race meet, the Maryland Junior Hunt Cup http://www.marylandjuniorhuntcup.com/ on April 29. And at Black Eyed Susan Day at Pimlico racetrack, the day before the Preakness Stakes May 18. Proceeds will be donated to cancer research that day. Check the events pages on this website for other signing dates.
I’ve been visiting pony clubs and libraries so if you would like me to visit your pony club, school or library, you should contact me. If I can’t get there in person, I can skype. If you’re close, I might even bring a horse!
This weekend I’m off to the Maryland Grand National on Saturday http://www.marylandsteeplechasing.com/main/mgn/datetime.htm
And on Sunday, I will be signing books to benefit the American Steeplechase Injured Jockeys Fund at the Fair Hill Point to Point http://fairhillp2p.com . Stop by and see me if you are in the area.
